A Memory Cafe is a safe and welcoming place for individuals with Alzheimer’s or other related dementias, where caregivers and their loved ones can talk and socialize, play games, listen to music, and do other sorts of social activities in a comfortable space. The Memory Cafe provides a mutual support system where they can simply enjoy the company of those with similar things in common. Mostly, the Memory Cafe is meant to help make connections with those who are being challenged in a similar manner as you and your loved one, where caregivers and their care partners can share information and experiences, and support each other.
GLSS's "In the Moment" Memory Cafes focuses on different themes each month for a unique experience. Themes vary from gardening, baseball, movies, anything that helps to connect attendees to themes and activities from their past. Like most Memory Cafes, we offer refreshments, and valuable resources to help you in your caregiving experience. You may find some events are more activities-based, while others focus on education. Sometimes they feature music and dancing. Other events might focus on crafts and painting. Activities are varied, but tend to focus on topics that are apt to cause one to reminisce about times gone by. That “connection” to the past can be as comforting as it is medically beneficial. Emphasis is often placed on activities where humor can be a central part of the enjoyment.
